Cycle the Aquarium

What does that mean?  I want to watch the fish, not go for a bike ride  Cycling your aquarium simply means giving the tank time to develop the benefical bacteria that will help to keep your fish alive.  These bacteria help break down amonia which is generate by fish waste.  To start, add 2-3 small fish to the tank for a few week with light feeding.  The tank will build up amonia which will start the cycle.  Once the initial cycle has started, you can slowly add more fish to the tank.

Water Changes

Each week you should drain 10-30% of the water in your tank and replace it with fresh water.  If you are looking for a quick, easy way to drain and fill the tank, consider finding a Python water changer.  They hook up to your fawcet and make draining and refilling very easy and mess free.  If you have well water you may be able to simply adjust the tempterature to match the tank water and pump or pour it back in.  If you have city water with chlorine, let the water set for a few days to a week in plastic water jugs to allow the chlorine to gas out of the water.  You can add a dechlorinator to quickly treat tap water.  Look for this at your local pet store.

Placement of Aquarium Coffee Table

Make sure you don't set your new aquarium coffee table in a place where it will get direct sun.  This will cause your tank to have rapid alge growth which will not be a good think.  Direct sunlight may also heat the tank to much.
